With the inauguration 21 May 1896 the Kaliningrad Zoo is the oldest one in Russia. From the beginning in the historic area of the Hufenpark visitors could enjoy 262 species with a total of 893 animals. Larger animals counted both lions and tigers.
I the 1930’s a new gate building was constructed in the style from German Bauhaus school. It still stands as the official entrance even though it has been changed a bit from its original look.
After World War II the zoo was reopened for public 27 May 1947. This time with 50 species, a number that was rapidly increased. Today the facility is both a cozy zoological garden with more than 2,000 animals and an arboretum with a large number of interesting plants and trees, i.e. a Temple Tree.
